Time to Give Back… By Dr Eric Shapira

At this time of year, I find it both important and instrumental in staying healthy mentally and to give back to people less fortunate than we may be. There are many older individuals who may be medically compromised, “shut-ins,” or alone due to various circumstances. No matter what the reason, one should remember that these people are human beings and have the same basic needs that everyone else has: food, clothing, shelter, love and friendship. As my motto suggests, “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Find a need and fill it concerning a person who may be less fortunate than yourself. One will find that by helping others you will be helping yourself in the long-run. The more one gives, the more one gets in return. I am not talking about monetary things per se, I am talking about giving time, reading to someone who is sight impaired, listening to someone talk about their past- telling their story, bringing someone food, cooking them a meal, giving them a ride or even helping them clean the house or fix the garden. It is all appreciated, even though sometimes people may have a difficult time showing their appreciation. Depression is a major concern this time of year for people of this ilk. For all one knows just spending a little time with someone may save their life. Remember to help yourself in ways you may have never dreamed of by helping someone you don’t even know possibly. Give the gift of giving and watch what happens to your attitude and mood. It is a real high! Peace to you and good health!
