September 1st is the 1st Local and Indie Author’s Night at Bookshop Santa Cruz

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Bookshop Santa Cruz is a proud supporter of local & independently published authors and we’re celebrating the first of a series of events dedicated to such writers. Our consignment program allows us to accept hundreds of professionally-produced, self-published books from our community and to devote our resources to prominently featuring them throughout the store. We help authors distribute and promote their books, and—in at least one case we know—we’ve been the inspiration to stop waiting and start publishing. Now we’re creating a chance where these authors can further feature their works with our first Local & Independently Published Authors Night.

An elderly couple was driving across the country. While the woman was behind the wheel, the couple was pulled over by the highway patrol.

“Ma’am, did you know you were speeding?” the officer said.

The woman, hard of hearing, turned to her husband and asked, “What did he say?”

“He said you were speeding!” the old man yelled.

The patrolman then asked, “May I see your license?”

The woman turned to her husband again, “What did he say?”

The old man yelled back, “He wants to see your license!”

The woman then gave the officer her license.

“I see you are from Arkansas,” the patrolman said. “I spent some time there once and went on a blind date with the ugliest woman I’ve ever seen.”

The woman turned to her husband again and asked, “What did he say?”

The old man replied, “He said he knows you!”

Stroke can be a life-threatening problem. There are two different kinds of stroke:  ischemic and hemorrhagic. Most strokes are ischemic and involve the sticking of a clot of some kind within an artery in the brain or carotid artery of the neck that keeps oxygen from getting there. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused from extensive bleeding into the brain, which kills brain cells as well.

Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in the United States. If you suspect you or someone you know is having a stroke,  look for the following symptoms:

S- Speech, or any problems with language

T-Tingling or numbness

R- Remember, or any problems with memory

O- OFF BALANCE, problems with coordination

K- KILLER HEADACHE

E- EYES, or any problems with vision

If you find yourself getting these symptoms out of the blue…call 911 immediately………………
